As a loving pet owner, you want to do everything you can to keep your furry friend healthy and happy. One important aspect of dog care is knowing what foods to avoid. While some human foods may seem harmless to us, they can be toxic to dogs. Here's a list of foods you should never give your dog, along with tips on what to do if your dog accidentally ingests one of them.
Foods to Avoid:
Chocolate: Chocolate contains theobromine, a chemical that is toxic to dogs. Even small amounts of chocolate can be fatal, so it's best to avoid giving it to your dog altogether.
Grapes and Raisins: These seemingly harmless fruits can cause kidney failure in dogs.
Onions and Garlic: Onions and garlic contain compounds that can damage red blood cells, leading to anaemia.
Macadamia Nuts: These nuts are toxic to dogs, causing vomiting, weakness, and tremors.
Xylitol: This artificial sweetener is found in many sugar-free products, including gum, candy, peanut butter (you can buy dog-friendly peanut butter) and toothpaste. Xylitol can cause hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar) and liver failure in dogs.
Alcohol: Alcohol can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, and even death in dogs.
Cooked Bones: Cooked bones can splinter and cause serious internal injuries. Always give your dog raw, meaty bones.
Avocado: Avocados contain a toxin that can cause vomiting and diarrhoea in dogs.
Yeast Dough: Yeast dough can expand in a dog's stomach, causing bloating and potentially twisting the stomach (gastric torsion), a life-threatening condition.
What to Do if Your Dog Eats Something Toxic:
If you suspect your dog has eaten something toxic, contact your veterinarian immediately. Don't wait for symptoms to appear. The sooner you act, the better the chances of a successful recovery.
