A Dog's Night In: Navigating Fireworks Night

Fireworks night can be a scary time for our furry friends. The loud bangs and bright flashes can cause significant distress for many dogs. Here are some tips to help your dog stay calm and safe during this noisy celebration.

Prepare a Safe Space:

  • Create a Den: Designate a quiet room in your home as a safe space for your dog. Make it cosy with soft blankets, comfortable bedding, and their favourite toys.

  • Use Calming Aids: Consider using calming aids like pheromone sprays or diffusers to reduce anxiety. Consult your vet for advice on appropriate calming medications.

  • Modify their environment: Keep curtains and blinds closed to reduce the flashing lights that can frighten your pets, and play music or leave a TV on to create a distraction from the noises and lights. Consider placing blankets as sound mufflers in front of doors or windows.

Plan Your Walks:

  • Daytime Adventures: Walk your dog during daylight hours to tire them out and reduce their energy levels.

  • Avoid Peak Times: Avoid walking your dog during peak firework times, as this can expose them to excessive noise and stress.

  • Identification: Make sure your pets have a collar and name tag, and are micro-chipped in the event they should escape from their normal environment.

Watch Fireworks Responsibly:

  • Keep it Short: If you decide to watch a fireworks display, keep it brief and consider leaving your dog at home with a trusted friend or family member.

  • Minimise Exposure: If you must take your dog outside in your own garden (perhaps for a toilet break), where possible choose a quiet period of time and return them to their "safe place" as quickly as possible and limit their exposure to noises and lights.

Remember: Every dog reacts differently to fireworks. It's important to know your dog's individual needs and sensitivities. If you're concerned about your dog's well-being, consult with a veterinarian for personalised advice.

By taking these steps, you can help your furry friend stay safe, calm, and comfortable during this often-stressful time.
